Sometimes a movie title just seems to describe perfectly its subject matter. With that said, Nancy Meyers has the perfect material to fit the title of her new film about relationships. Jane (Maryl Streep)has been divorced for ten years now, She has three children and with the last one going away to school is about to be alone for the first time. She is successful and is finally ready to move on from her divorce and build that addition she has always wanted on her house.
She and her ex Jake (Alec Baldwin) get along good, even though Jake is now married to Agness (Lake Bell), the women he left Jane for. Jane also meets Adam (Steve Martin), who happens to be one of Jane’s Architects, and who is helping her with her expansion plans.
Everything becomes complicated, after while on a trip to see their son graduate, Jake and Jane reconnect and end up sleeping together. Thinking there may be unfinished business; Jane and Jake secretly see each other behind everyone’s back.
No ones suspects a thing, that is until Jane and Jakes future son in law Harley (Jake Krasinski) witnesses them together at a hotel. All the while this is happening Adam starts to fall for Jane and at the same time Jane sees something in Adam as well.
Not many people do relationship movies better then Nancy Meyers, she seems to always balance out the comedy and drama perfectly. This time she also has an all star cast, and they all seem to fit perfectly in the characters they are playing.
The story is pretty universal and shows that life’s complications are sometimes caused by our own doings. I was pleasantly surprised with the movie and how many laugh out moments it had. Romantic comedies are a dime a dozen and it is always good to see one that stands out from the rest.
Sometimes timing is everything and this is one of those films that just came out at the right time. You will enjoy its smart humor the film has and the witty dialogue. So when you are looking at what movies to see this holiday season, try and not make it too complicated and make your way to see a film that stands out from the rest.
